Water Baptism

The Significance of Water Baptism

Water Baptism is a statement – Water Baptism is a public declaration that you have received Jesus Christ into your life. You are saying that you are His disciple; a follower of Him. [Colossians 2:12]

Water Baptism is for believers – A believer is someone who has realized that their sin has separated them from God. They have decided to trust Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins. [1 John 1:9]

Water Baptism identifies the believer with Christ’s life – The Apostle Paul explains how the immersion mode of baptism identifies the believer with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The believer illustrates the death of Christ by going under the water and the resurrection of Christ by coming up. [Romans 6:1-11]

Water Baptism is a point in time – You will refer to this moment as the time you made a public declaration that you are a follower of Jesus Christ. [Acts 2:38]

Water Baptism is a time of beginning – Jesus began His ministry when He was baptized by John in the Jordan River. He began to teach, to heal the sick, and to do other miracles. [Luke 3:23]

Water Baptism is an affirmation of identity – At the baptism of Christ, God the Father said, “This is my beloved Son.” [Mark 1:11]

Water Baptism is an affirmation of God’s love and pleasure – “…with whom I am well pleased.”  Obedience always pleases God! [Luke 3:22]

Water Baptism is an occasion for the manifestation of the Holy Spirit – “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on Him. [John 1:32]

Water Baptism is following the example of Jesus Christ – Being a follower of Christ includes being baptized in water. This is evident throughout the New Testament.    [Luke 3:21-22]
